The items found on this blog were written during the past few years and strictly reflect my own opinions. Because these articles deal with difficult issues they are bound to be controversial. They reflect my personal analysis based on the limited information that I have. I am certainly no expert and fully respect different opinions. Difficult issues would not be difficult if there were clear-cut answers. Although you will see in reading some of my material, I don't like being pigeonholed with a label, I will admit to being politically independent with a tendency to be more conservative fiscally and slightly more liberal with regard to social issues. Having lived through the 1940's, I have a great appreciation for the sacrifices made by our armed forces and, in fact, all Americans during World War II. The greatness of this country shone bright as we rehabilitated and rebuilt our enemies after winning that war. I am very patriotic and proud of our country. While we are far from perfect, we're not as far from that ideal as most other countries in the world.

Stuart’s Thoughts   9/19/2017

Be A Proud American

I don’t like the recent trend of finding all manner of fault with our great country.  Lately, it’s become fashionable to slam and criticize everything past generations have fought and sacrificed for.  My father’s generation, “the greatest generation”, sacrificed everything to save the world from the axis tyranny of Hitler’s Nazi Germany and the Empire of Japan in the Second World War.  Nearly 417,000 U.S. servicemen and servicewomen lost their lives and countless others were severely wounded in that conflict not to mention the significant years of their lives lost to the war.   Virtually every country in Europe owes their current existence to those brave souls.
Throughout modern history, the U.S. has been the first country to respond to desperation and tragedy experienced by others around the world.  We rush needed humanitarian aid to all manner of natural disasters and to small countries being prayed upon by stronger neighbors.  Currently many small island nations in the Caribbean are being devastated by tropical storms.  You can bet the lion’s share of foreign aid in the wake of these tragedies will come from the U.S. and it’s compassionate citizens.

Meanwhile, our country is being criticized and vilified by many both within and from outside of our country.  Now I’m not saying we are perfect or better than anyone else but I am tired of the U.S. taking it on the chin from the envious and resentful both foreign and home grown.  Those spoiled brat millionaires playing football who refuse to show respect for our nation during the playing of the National Anthem may be the most visible of the misguided but there are many others who, given the opportunity, willingly sling “crap” at our country.
I wish you all would go to YouTube and watch the short 1973 talk given by the Canadian journalist Gordon Sinclair - The Americans.  In my opinion, every schoolchild and their teachers should hear this address.

Be a proud American.  Stand up for your country.  The United States is the greatest most compassionate and most successful country the world has ever known.  We have been blessed to have been born here and I can tell you after attending many presentations given by NCSU graduate students from many countries, most would give anything to be in our shoes.
